The Soil Food Web — How Living Soil Works
Most people think of soil as dirt. Something plants sit in. Something inert.
It isn't.
Healthy soil is one of the most complex living ecosystems on the planet. A single teaspoon contains more living organisms than there are people on Earth. What happens beneath your feet is not simple chemistry. It is a dynamic, self-regulating community of life that has been evolving and refining itself for hundreds of millions of years.
We call it the soil food web. And like the systems inside your own body, every part depends on every other part. Disrupt one and you feel it everywhere.
The Organisms and What They Do
Think of the soil food web the way you think about your digestive system. Your gut doesn't just process food mechanically — it relies on billions of microorganisms to break things down, absorb nutrients, regulate inflammation, and protect against pathogens. Healthy gut, healthy body. Damaged gut, everything suffers.
Soil works the same way.
Bacteria are the foundation. They are the first decomposers, breaking down fresh organic matter and making nutrients available to everything above them in the web. Different species dominate different conditions — some fix nitrogen from the air, some suppress disease, some produce compounds that bind soil particles together and improve structure. Bacterial dominated soils tend to support annual crops and vegetables.
Fungi work differently and often deeper. Fungal hyphae — threadlike structures that extend far beyond the root zone — form networks that connect plants to nutrients and water that roots alone could never reach. Mycorrhizal fungi form a direct symbiotic relationship with plant roots, trading nutrients for the carbon sugars the plant produces through photosynthesis. This relationship is ancient, and most plants evolved with it. Without it, they are working at a fraction of their potential. Fungal dominated soils tend to support perennial plants, shrubs, and trees.
The Rhizosphere is the narrow zone of soil directly surrounding plant roots, and it is where most of the biological action happens. Plants are not passive in this zone. They actively secrete compounds — sugars, amino acids, enzymes — specifically designed to attract and feed the bacteria and fungi they need. In return those organisms break down nutrients into forms the plant can absorb. It is a transaction that has been happening for as long as plants have existed, and it is far more sophisticated than anything we spray from a bottle.
Protozoa and Nematodes are predators. They feed on bacteria and fungi, and in doing so they release nitrogen and other nutrients in plant-available forms. This predator-prey relationship is one of the primary drivers of nutrient cycling in healthy soil. Without predators, bacteria accumulate but nutrients stay locked up. The cycle needs all its parts.
Earthworms are the engineers. They tunnel, mix, and aerate. Their castings are among the most nutrient-dense materials in nature, rich in bacteria, available nitrogen, calcium, and plant growth compounds. A soil with healthy earthworm populations is a soil that is managing itself.
Arthropods — beetles, mites, millipedes, springtails — shred and fragment larger organic material, breaking it down into pieces small enough for bacteria and fungi to work with. They are the front end of the decomposition process, and without them the system slows.
Bacterial Dominance vs Fungal Dominance
Not all healthy soils are the same. The ratio of bacteria to fungi in your soil should match what you are growing.
Vegetable gardens, lawns, and annual crops tend to thrive in bacterially dominated soils. Orchards, vineyards, forest systems, and perennial landscapes tend to need fungal dominance. Most agricultural soils that have been tilled and treated with synthetics have lost their fungal communities almost entirely, which is one reason perennial systems struggle so much after conventional farming.

The Nitrogen Cycle and Why It Matters
Nitrogen is the most discussed nutrient in agriculture, and also the most misunderstood. Synthetic nitrogen is immediately available but feeds plants like a shot of sugar — fast, temporary, and dependent on the next application. It also disrupts the microbial community that cycles nitrogen naturally, making the plant increasingly dependent on external inputs over time.
In a healthy soil food web, nitrogen cycles continuously. Bacteria fix it from the air. Fungi and bacteria immobilize it in their bodies. Protozoa and nematodes release it as waste when they consume bacteria. Earthworms concentrate and deposit it. Plants absorb it through the rhizosphere. Nothing leaves the system. Nothing is wasted.
The carbon to nitrogen ratio of your organic inputs matters enormously here. High carbon materials like straw and wood chips feed fungi and slow-release bacteria. High nitrogen materials like fresh manure and green plant material feed fast bacteria and accelerate decomposition. Managing that ratio is one of the core skills of biological growing.
Where Compost Teas Fit In
Compost teas are not a fertilizer in the conventional sense. They do not deliver a set amount of nitrogen or phosphorus per gallon. What they deliver is life.
A well-brewed compost tea is a concentrated solution of the organisms that make the soil food web function — bacteria, fungi, protozoa, nematodes — along with the food sources those organisms need to establish and thrive in your soil. Applied to soil or as a foliar spray, they reintroduce biology that tillage, chemicals, and time have stripped away.
