How Compost Tea Works: The Biology Behind the Brew

Healthy soil is alive. In just one teaspoon of healthy soil, there can be billions of bacteria, miles of fungal threads, thousands of protozoa, and dozens of beneficial nematodes. Together, these organisms form the soil food web, a living ecosystem that supports every plant growing above it.

When soil biology is healthy, these microorganisms perform countless jobs that plants cannot do on their own. They break down organic matter, recycle nutrients, improve soil structure, increase water retention, protect roots from disease, and build the foundation for long-term plant health.

Brewing Living Biology

Compost tea begins with high-quality compost that is rich in beneficial microorganisms. That compost is placed into clean, dechlorinated water and continuously supplied with oxygen using powerful air pumps. Carefully selected microbial foods are added to encourage beneficial organisms to reproduce.

Over the next 24 to 36 hours, billions of aerobic bacteria, fungi, protozoa, and other beneficial microorganisms multiply throughout the brew.

Unlike stagnant compost water, actively aerated compost tea remains oxygen-rich throughout the brewing process. This oxygen is critical because it allows beneficial aerobic organisms to thrive while discouraging the growth of undesirable anaerobic microbes.

The goal isn't simply to extract organisms from compost. It's to grow a thriving population of beneficial life before the tea is applied.

What Happens After Application?

Once applied to the soil or sprayed onto plant leaves, these microorganisms immediately begin colonizing their new environment.

In the soil, they help decompose organic matter, cycle nutrients into plant-available forms, improve soil aggregation, and establish healthy microbial communities around plant roots. Fungi help create networks that transport water and nutrients, while bacteria and protozoa continually recycle nutrients plants need for growth.

When applied as a foliar spray, beneficial microbes can occupy the surface of leaves, making it more difficult for harmful organisms to establish themselves. A healthy microbial community acts as a natural first line of defense for the plant.
